Monique Taylor (Eastern Band Cherokee/Diné ), a member of the Bitterwater Clan, has showcased her work across the United States. A life-long practitioner, she has been working in the medium of beadwork for forty years, white oak basketry for three years, and pottery and shell work over the past year. Indigenous ancestry and family connection has been paramount to Taylor’s work and these relationships bring inspiration to her artistic vision. Both the Navajo and Cherokee legacy of artistic innovation are reflected in her design and craftsmanship. Taylor learned to bead from her uncle Albert Yazzie Johnson (Diné /Navajo Nation), Basketry from her cousin Louise Goings (EBCI), shell work from clan relative Antonio Grant (EBCI) and Nancy Pheasant (EBCI), and pottery from Tara McCoy(EBCI). Each apprenticeship has informed her fashion design aesthetic and results in a truly multicultural fashion collection that honors a rich cultural heritage and modern Indigenous identity. Monique currently resides in the Birdtown Community of Cherokee, NC.
