Toby McCoy (Eastern Band Cherokee), a member of the Wolf Clan, is an up-and-coming visionary Cherokee artist. In 2022, he was named Kananesgi’s Best of Show in the Young Adult category for his collection. Such artistic excellence is not surprising when one considers that his mother is Tara McCoy, a renowned master Cherokee potter and instructor. Toby credits her with inspiring his own work and teaching him the art form of both traditional and contemporary pottery. While his artistic vision is clearly contemporary and fashion-forward, elements of McCoy’s cultural heritage and cultural history are inherent in his designs. He is a recent graduate of the Cherokee Language Master Apprentice Program and is working as an instructor to further language efforts in his Cherokee community. McCoy currently resides in the Birdtown Community of Cherokee, NC.
