Alex Lane (Eastern Band Cherokee) is an up-and-coming designer who brings with her a wealth of formal training and experience within the fashion industry. Lane earned a Professional Designation Associates in Beauty Marketing and Product Development from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Science Family and Consumer Sciences from University of Georgia, double majoring in Fashion Merchandising and Consumer Journalism. This academic foundation is bolstered by over 15 years experience as a visual artist (painting and drawing), 6 years as a beader and clothing designer, and two years as a graphic artist. Lane is especially skilled at understanding color theory and trend forecasting and employs these talents in her current role as Manager of Visitor Services at the Museum of the Cherokee People. She credits the influences of her maternal grandmother, a watercolor painter and seamstress, and her maternal great-grandfather’s skill with design and pattern cutting as serving as some of her earliest teachers and inspiration. Her Kananesgi collection pays homage to her great-grandfather’s sketches and patterns, other vintage clothing, fine art, and nature—all while ensuring her fits serve a practical, wearable function. Lane is a member of the Wolftown Community and currently resides in Bryson City, NC with her husband Garrett and son, Tohi Lane.
