Kimberly Smith (Eastern Band Cherokee), member of the Wolf Clan, has been growing her vast artistic skills for over fifteen years. Though largely self-taught, she credits her mother and friends with being early teachers that peaked her interest in fashion design. Joined by her daughters, Jasmine and Janee, Smith created Tali Elohi (Two Worlds), a design business focused in the mediums of fabrics, textiles and shoe design. Smith fashions traditional attire, powwow regalia, beadwork, woven belts, and other clothing for children, dolls, and adults. At Tali Elohi, Smith’s art and clothing represent the struggles, complexity, and celebrations of living in two worlds: urban and Cherokee culture. Each season her collections speak to a cultural component or issue in her community including issues like MMIW, boarding schools, identity, language, stickball, basket making, pottery, and storytelling.
Smith currently lives in the Yellowhill Community of Cherokee, North Carolina.
